The Historic Gainsboro neighborhood is Roanoke's first community and was the vibrant commercial and cultural center for black folks during Jim Crow in the Roanoke Valley and beyond. From 1915-1970, residents enjoyed shopping, dining, and socializing at Black-owned businesses while receiving medical, legal, and other professional services from Black professionals. Unfortunately it was redlined to sh*t in the 60's and 70's by the city in the name of "urban renewal". Large portions of the neighborhood were decimated, displacing families and businesses, while segregating the mostly black neighborhood from downtown and other city hubs. Now we have 581. Great.
